Multidisciplinary limb salvage service: Reducing major amputations in diabetic foot infections
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 30, 2017
Pillado E, et al. – This research incorporated an inquiry of the multidisciplinary vascular limb salvage service (LSS) in order to reduce major amputations in diabetic foot infections (DFI). A decrease was noted in the major amputation rate in patients with DFI, particularly below–the–knee amputation. This was partly due to culture–directed antimicrobials resulting from standardized protocol and infection disease consultation. The inpatient diabetes management was optimized by the endocrine service. There was no rise in the length of stay and no change was seen in the 30–day readmission rate. Hence, LSS was found to be feasible and effective even in safety net hospitals.
