Mortality, morbidity, and risk factors in China and its provinces, 1990–2017: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
The Lancet Jun 30, 2019
Zhou M, et al. - Through a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, researchers analyzed health patterns in 34 province-level administrative units in China from 1990 to 2017 in order to inform decision-making and monitor progress on health at the province level. In 2017, leading causes of death and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) at the national level were strokes and ischemic heart disease whereas the five major causes of years of life lost were an age-standardized stroke, ischemic heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and liver cancer. Also, the three chief causes of years lived with disability in 2017 were musculoskeletal disorders, mental health disorders, and sense organ diseases; high systolic blood pressure, smoking, high-sodium diet, and ambient particulate matter pollution were the major causes of deaths and DALYs. The researchers thus concluded that, in terms of the reduction of the burden of many diseases and disabilities, China has made substantial progress. Further, they indicated that, in the expanding Chinese healthcare system, strategies—mainly in older individuals—focusing on chronic diseases should be considered.
