Mortality in IgA nephropathy: A nationwide population-based cohort study
Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Apr 17, 2019
Jarrick S, et al. - Via a population-based cohort study in Sweden, researchers assessed death and ESRD among 3622 patients with biopsy-verified IgA nephropathy (IgAN) diagnosed in 1974–2011, matched to 18,041 controls, by using data from three national registers. Including 2773 patients with IgAN with 6210 siblings, a sibling analysis was also carried out. They also performed a spousal analysis comprising 2234 pairs. Deaths of 577 (1.1%) IgAN patients (10.67 per 1000 person-years) were reported during a median follow-up of 13.6 years. In comparison, during a median follow-up of 14.1 years (7.45 per 1000 person-years), 2066 deaths (0.7%) were reported in the reference population. Compared with matched controls, increased mortality was reported in patients with IgAN, with one extra death per 310 person-years and a 6-year reduction in life expectancy.
