Mortality in children with early-detected congenital central hypothyroidism
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Aug 12, 2018
Zwaveling-Soonawala N, et al. - In the present study, researchers analyzed the mortality rate in pediatric patients with early-detected and treated congenital central hypothyroidism (CH-C) in the Netherlands and whether to pituitary hormone deficiencies had any influence on causes of death. Between January 1, 1995 and January 1, 2013, overall mortality rate, infant mortality rate (IMR), and under-5 mortality rate was calculated in all children with CH-C found via neonatal screening. In patients with early-detected CH-C, an increased mortality rate was reported that did not seem associated with endocrine disease. In patients with early-detected and early-treated CH-C, mortality due to pituitary insufficiency was low.
