Morbid obesity in revision total knee arthroplasty: A significant risk factor for reoperation
Journal of Arthroplasty Jan 18, 2019
Sisko ZW, et al. - In this study, researchers assessed 87 subjects and divided them into 2 groups viz, morbidly obese (BMI>40 kg/m2) and non-morbidly obese (BMI<40 kg/m2) to investigate and compare the surgical and clinical consequences among subjects experiencing first-time revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with a minimum 5-year follow-up. They noted raised final WOMAC scores, a greater variation between preoperative and final KSS and SF-12 Mental component in the non-morbidly obese group. They also observed a higher frequency of reoperation and re-revision with a significantly lower 10-year survivorship for reoperation and subsequent revision in the morbidly obese group.
