Morbid obesity in revision total knee arthroplasty: A significant risk factor for re-operation
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 13, 2019
Sisko ZW, et al. - Investigators analyzed 87 cases (body mass index [BMI] >40 or <40 kg/m2) to comparatively estimate the surgical and clinical consequences between matched groups of morbidly obese (BMI >40 kg/m2) and non-morbidly obese (BMI <40 kg/m2) candidates undergoing first-time revision total knee arthroplasty with a minimum 5-year follow-up. They noticed had a significantly greater incidence of re-operation and re-revision among the morbidly obese group with a significantly lower 10-year survivorship for re-operation and subsequent revision. They typically found a higher incidence of re-operation and re-revision among the aseptic sub-group.
