Migraine with aura as early disease marker in Hereditary Dutch-Type Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy
Stroke Mar 08, 2020
Koemans EA, Voigt S, Rasing I, et al. - Researchers evaluated migraine and its association with MRI markers in Hereditary Dutch-Type Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (D-CAA or Hereditary Cerebral Hemorrhage With Amyloidosis-Dutch type) to ascertain if migraine, which has often been described as an inaugural manifestation in monogenic cerebrovascular syndromes, is related to cerebral amyloid pathology. Between 2012 and 2018, all D-CAA mutation carriers who visited the clinic have been involved. They involved 86 D-CAA mutation carriers (57% women, mean age 57 years), 48 (56%) suffered from migraine, all with aura. Migraine with aura is a significant symptom in D-CAA which is often inaugural. Aura attacks in D-CAA that lasting ≥ 60 minutes can signify acute ICH. Migraine with aura may be regarded as an early predictor of illness in hereditary CAA many years before symptomatic ICH occurs.
