Microvascular disease and incident heart failure among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 16, 2021
Kaze AD, Santhanam P, Erqou S, et al. - Researchers performed an analysis of the prospective data from the Look AHEAD (Action of Health in Diabetes) study to explore the connection between microvascular disease (MVD) and incident heart failure (HF) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In total, 4,095 candidates (mean age, 58.3 years [SD, 6.6 years]; 61.9% women) with type 2 diabetes mellitus and free of HF were evaluated for diabetes mellitus–related MVD including nephropathy, retinopathy, or neuropathy at baseline. Using hospital and death records, incident HF events were assessed and adjudicated prospectively. There were 117 HF events over a median of 9.7 years. After adjusting for other known risk factors, MVD is linked to an excess HF risk in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The findings highlight the role of MVD in the development of diabetes-related HF.
