Microvascular complications burden (nephropathy, retinopathy and peripheral polyneuropathy) affects risk of major vascular events and all-cause mortality in type 1 diabetes: A 10-year follow-up study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Nov 23, 2019
Garofolo M, Gualdani E, Giannarelli R, et al. - Researchers examined how Microvascular complication (MC) burden relate to incidence of major cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in individuals with type 1 diabetes. In this single-center observational study, 774 participants with type 1 diabetes were included; of these, 54.9% had no-MC, 32.3% 1 MC, 9.7% 2 MC and 3.1% 3 MC. Findings revealed that microvascular complications burden increases the risk of major cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality in an independent dose-dependent manner in type 1 diabetes. Based on findings, they recommend considering the presence and number of microvascular complications in stratifying overall cardiovascular risk in type 1 diabetes.
