Meta-analysis on the effect of mild primary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroidectomy upon arterial stiffness
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 19, 2021
Bernardi S, Giudici F, Barbato V, et al. - The selection of the studies was carried out using PubMed, Google Scholar, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to examine if mild primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) was correlated with higher pulse wave velocity (PWV) and if parathyroidectomy (PTX) reduced PWV in mild pHPT, as well as to investigate blood pressure changes after PTX. Participants in the study were 433 patients with mild pHPT, 171 of whom underwent PTX, and 407 controls. Aortic stiffness is higher in patients with mild pHPT, implying that mild pHPT is linked to adverse cardiovascular manifestations. PTX significantly reduced arterial stiffness in mild pHPT, indicating that the benefit of PTX over cardiovascular manifestations should not be overlooked, but it requires further investigation.
