Meta‐analysis on the long‐term effectiveness of psychological and medical treatments for binge‐eating disorder
International Journal of Eating Disorders Sep 04, 2020
Hilbert A, Petroff D, Herpertz S, et al. - Via performing this meta‐analysis, researchers sought to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the long‐term effectiveness in diverse treatments for binge‐eating disorder (BED) in randomized‐controlled trials (RCTs), nonrandomized and uncontrolled treatment studies regarding binge eating, eating disorder and general psychopathology, and body weight. A systematic search up to February 2018 yielded 114 relevant studies, totaling 8,862 individuals with BED (DSM‐IV, DSM‐5), for inclusion in this analysis. Per outcomes, psychotherapy, structured self‐help treatment, and combined treatment demonstrate medium‐term effectiveness for patients with BED, and psychotherapy seems to have long‐term effectiveness. Uncontrolled comparisons over time led to derivation of the results.
