Meniscal allograft transplantation is an effective treatment in patients older than 50 years but yields inferior results compared with younger patients: A case-control study
Arthroscopy Aug 13, 2019
Zaffagnini S, Grassi A, Macchiarola L, et al. - Researchers investigated the efficacy of meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) in patients older than 50 years. The data regarding midterm clinical outcomes and failures of MAT in patients older than 50 years (older MAT group) with at least 5 years of follow-up were compared with that of a matched-pair group of patients younger than 30 years of age (younger MAT group). Patients older than 50 years exhibited symptom relief and functional improvement at midterm follow-up following MAT although the results were inferior and the failure rate was higher compared with those younger than 30 years. Findings suggest that consideration could be given to the MAT as a viable option to treat patients older than 50 years.
