Meibomian gland morphology is a sensitive early indicator of meibomian gland dysfunction
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 25, 2018
Adil MY, et al. - Authors analyzed 538 cases with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and 21 healthy controls to evaluate the correlation of meibomian gland (MG) morphology and clinical dry eye tests in MGD cases in a cross-sectional study. They noted the difficulty in early detection of MGD (by standard clinical measures of dry eye) due to the compensatory mechanisms eg, increased aqueous tear production and dilatation of MGs. The sensitivity and specificity of the meibograde as a diagnostic parameter for MGD was recorded by 96.7% and 85%, respectively. MG thickness was also observed increased with higher meibograde.
