Measuring disturbance of the endocannabinoid system in psychosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Sep 13, 2019
Minichino A, Senior M, Brondino N, et al. - Researchers examined the endocannabinoid system, a lipid-based endogenous signaling system, in people with psychosis via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 studies. People with psychosis showed a higher tone of the endocannabinoid system, a finding that was consistent across all stages of illness and independent of antipsychotic treatment and current cannabis use. They observed an inverse association of this increased tone with the severity of psychosis symptoms and after remission of psychosis, normalization of the tone occurred. These findings emphasize the endocannabinoid system as a useful target for illness measurement and treatment.
