Measurement of squamous cell carcinoma antigen 2 in lichen planus patients
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Dec 15, 2019
Khattab FM, et al. - In this investigation involving 34 adult patients with lichen planus (LP), an autoinflammatory mucocutaneous skin disorder with a multifactorial pathogenesis, and 20 healthy adults as control, researchers estimated serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen 2 (SCCA2) levels and evaluated its association with disease severity and types. According to findings, the mean serum levels of SCCA2 in patients were significantly higher than their healthy controls and in female patients relative to male patients. Compared with patients with localized and hypertrophic forms, the mean serum SCCA2 levels in those with eruptive LP were significantly higher. Serum SCCA2 can be a possible biomarker for LP as it has been elevated in LP patients and has been correlated with the severity of the disease. More studies are required to assess its blockade's therapeutic effect, which could be a way of improving outcome in patients with LP.
