Maternal outcomes by race during postpartum readmissions
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 22, 2019
Aziz A, et al. - Utilizing the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project from 2012 to 2014, researchers investigated the association of race with serious complications during postpartum readmissions in this repeated cross-sectional analysis. They identified 11.3 million births and analyzed 207,730 (1.8%) women admitted postpartum from 2012 to 2014. These women included 96,670 white, 47,015 black, and 33,410 Hispanic women. Black women displayed higher risk for readmission postpartum and for severe maternal morbidity during readmission in addition to higher risk for suffering life-threatening complications such as pulmonary edema / acute heart failure. Short-term postpartum follow up may benefit at-risk women including black women with cardiovascular risk factors.
