Maternal iodine insufficiency and excess are associated with adverse effects on fetal growth: A prospective cohort study in Wuhan, China
The Journal of Nutrition Sep 25, 2018
Chen R, et al. - Considering the possible association of maternal iodine status with birth outcomes, researchers examined maternal iodine status during early pregnancy as well as the relationship between maternal iodine status and fetal growth among 2,087 singleton-pregnant women participating in the Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort study. Outcomes suggested the coexistence of maternal iodine insufficiency and excess during early pregnancy, with both of the conditions adversely affecting fetal growth. This highlights the necessity for ongoing monitoring of iodine status among vulnerable pregnant women in order to optimize iodine nutrition during pregnancy.
