Maternal exposure to DDT and pyrethroids and birth outcomes among residents of an area sprayed for malaria control participating in the VHEMBE Birth Cohort Study
American Journal of Epidemiology Jul 12, 2018
Chevrier J, et al. - Researchers investigated the associations of maternal exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and pyrethroids with birth outcomes among residents of an area sprayed for malaria control participating in the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (VHEMBE), a birth cohort study of 751 South African children born between 2012 and 2013. They found that prenatal exposure to DDT was associated with elevated birth size. They observed that only girls showed an association of p,pā-DDT, o,pā-DDT and, to a lesser extent, of p,pā-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene with elevated birth weight, length and head circumference. Results showed no associations with pyrethroid metabolites.
