Maternal comorbidities and complications of delivery in pregnant women with congenital heart disease
Journal of the American College of Cardiology May 03, 2019
Schlichting LE, et al. - Using multivariable logistic regression, researchers compared pregnant women with and without congenital heart defects (CHDs) in the US, focusing on comorbidities and adverse cardiovascular, obstetric, and fetal events during delivery. From the 2008 to 2013 National Inpatient Sample, they identified 22,881,691 deliveries. A total of 17,729 women with CHDs had deliveries (77.5 of 100,000 deliveries). Comorbidities including pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease, as well as adverse events during delivery including heart failure, arrhythmias, thromboembolic events, pre-eclampsia, and placenta previa were more frequently evident in pregnant women with CHDs vs those without CHDs. Additional monitoring and care were needed in pregnant women with CHDs.
