Maternal cardiac arrest in the Netherlands: A nationwide surveillance study
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology May 25, 2019
Schaap TP, et al. - Using the Netherlands Obstetric Surveillance System, all Dutch cases of maternal cardiac arrest over a three-year period (2013–2016) were obtained to assess their incidence, causes, and management in the Netherlands. In addition, a comparison of the incidence with previous estimates in the Netherlands and the UK was made. Maternal cardiac arrest incidence of 7.6 per 100,000 pregnancies; it was 3.6 per 100,000 pregnancies when the postpartum maternal cardiac arrest was excluded. Pulmonary embolism (n=9), major obstetric hemorrhage (n=7) and amniotic fluid embolism (n=6) were identified to be the key causes, all potentially preventable and/or treatable complications of pregnancy. Researchers noted inadequate use of critical elements of obstetric resuscitation, suggesting improved obstetric emergency training for obstetric and non-obstetric first responders is needed.
