Maternal anaemia and maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes in a prospective cohort study in India and Pakistan
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Feb 17, 2019
Parks S, et al. - The association of maternal anemia with maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes was investigated in this prospective cohort study. Analyzing a prospective pregnancy registry, researchers included a total of 92,247 deliveries and 93,107 infants, of which 87.8% were born to mothers who were anemic (mild 37.9%, moderate 49.1%, and severe 0.7%). Higher risks of poor maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes were evident with severe maternal anemia but not with other degrees of anemia. This emphasizes considering interventions directed at preventing severe anaemia in pregnant women.
