Malocclusion and maxillofacial characteristics of young girls having precocious puberty
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Jun 25, 2018
de Paula DF, et al. - In this cross-sectional study including 39 young girls (6 to 11 years old) having precocious puberty (PP), researchers evaluated the dentofacial characteristics and requirement for orthodontic treatment. A high prevalence (64.1%) of severe and very severe malocclusion [Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) grades 3-4] was observed. They identified 82.1% of cases who were classified as having moderate to high treatment need [the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN)grades 3-4]. Results thus suggest considering dental and craniofacial development in young girls in the diagnosis and treatment decisions for orthopaedic/orthodontic intervention. As dental and craniofacial development could be associated with PP.
