Male circumcision reduces penile HPV incidence and persistence: A randomized controlled trial in Kenya
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention May 14, 2021
Smith JS, Backes DM, Hudgens, et al. - This study was attempted to explore the impact of male circumcision on the incidence and natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a randomized clinical trial in Kisumu, Kenya. Researchers enrolled a total of 2,193 men who participated in this study (1,096 randomized to circumcision; 1,097 controls). Via intent-to-treat analyses, HPV incidence and persistence were evaluated. This study’s findings demonstrate that male circumcision decreased the risk of HPV acquisition and reinfection, and elevated HPV clearance in the glans.
