Macular holes following vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: Epiretinal proliferation and spontaneous closure of macular holes
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Apr 23, 2021
Uemura A, Arimura N, Yamakiri K, et al. - In this retrospective, interventional, consecutive case series, researchers described the features and management of full-thickness macular holes (MHs) that develop after pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD). Participants in the study were patients who developed secondary full-thickness MHs after prior pars plana vitrectomy for RD over a 6-year period. In total, 11 eyes of 11 consecutive patients were involved in the study. Full-thickness MHs after pars plana vitrectomy for RD have characteristics that differ from typical idiopathic MH. Epiretinal proliferations (EPs) are commonly present, and MHs are prone to spontaneous closure and reopening. Such findings imply that EP may be linked to spontaneous hole closure and that long-term monitoring is required even if the MHs close spontaneously.
