Lyme borreliosis and associations with mental disorders and suicidal behavior: A nationwide Danish cohort study
American Journal of Psychiatry Aug 01, 2021
Fallon BA, Madsen T, Erlangsen A, et al. - By conducting a nationwide retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed rates of mental disorders post-Lyme borreliosis. They used Denmark’s National Patient Register and the Psychiatric Central Research Register, as well as involved all individuals residing in Denmark from 1994 through 2016 (N=6,945,837). They analyzed all people diagnosed with Lyme borreliosis in inpatient and outpatient hospital contacts (N = 12,156). Using Poisson regression analyses, incidence rate ratios were computed. Findings showed an elevated risk of mental disorders, affective disorders, suicide attempts, and suicide was present in individuals diagnosed with Lyme borreliosis in the hospital setting. Although a low absolute population risk was noted, clinicians are advised to be aware of potential psychiatric sequelae of this global disease.
