Lumbar epidural lipomatosis is associated with visceral fat and metabolic disorders
European Spine Journal May 08, 2018
Morishita S, et al. - Researchers probed the link between lumbar spinal epidural lipomatosis (LEL) and metabolic disorders. They examined the patients who had neurological symptoms due to neural compression in the lumbar spinal canal by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans and blood tests. They also compared the LEL and non-LEL patients in terms of demographics and the radiological parameters. Findings showed significantly more visceral fat and increased levels of insulin, uric acid (UA) and ferritin in LEL patients, which demonstrated a close association with metabolic disorders. An association of increased epidural fat in the spinal canal seen in the LEL patients with metabolic syndrome was noted.
