Lower risk of invasive meningococcal disease during pregnancy; National prospective surveillance in England, 2011-2014
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Apr 07, 2019
Parikh SR, et al. - Public Health England performed enhanced national surveillance for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in England to describe IMD in women of child-bearing age. Further, pregnant and non-pregnant women were assessed for the disease incidence and relative risk of IMD. During the four-year surveillance period, 1,502 IMD cases in women were reported across England; 310 (20.6%) of these were reported in women of reproductive age, including four who were pregnant at IMD confirmation (1.3%). Observations revealed nearly five times less chances of developing IMD in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women. However, if develop during pregnancy, the infection can be severe.
