Lower risk of invasive meningococcal disease during pregnancy: National prospective surveillance in England, 2011–2014
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology May 15, 2019
Parikh SR, et al. - Researchers sought to describe women of reproductive age (15–44 years) with laboratory-confirmed invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). In addition, they examined pregnant vs non-pregnant women for the disease incidence and relative risk of IMD. Across England, they identified 1502 cases of IMD in females during the 4-year surveillance period. Of these, 310 (20.6%) cases were in women of reproductive age, including four women who were pregnant at the time of IMD confirmation (1.3%). Findings suggest that IMD is nearly five times less likely in pregnant women compared with non-pregnant women. However, the infection can be severe in these females.
