Lower risk of invasive meningococcal disease during pregnancy; National prospective surveillance in England, 2011-2014
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Apr 05, 2019
Parikh SR, et al. - Via performing prospective enhanced national surveillance for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), cases of IMD in women of child-bearing age were described. In addition, disease incidence and relative risk of IMD in pregnant compared to non-pregnant women were determined. Across England, 1,502 IMD cases in women were noted during the four-year surveillance period; 310 (20.6%) of these were in women of reproductive age, including four who were pregnant at IMD confirmation (1.3%). Observations revealed nearly five times less tendency for developing IMD among pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women. However, infection can be severe in pregnant women.
