Low serum phosphate and magnesium levels are associated with peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Oct 05, 2018

Zhang Q, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), researchers assessed the associations of serum phosphate, serum magnesium and peripheral nerve function by analyzing data from 254 subjects diagnosed with T2DM. In patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), serum phosphate and serum magnesium levels were significantly lower. A positive association was noted between composite z score of conduction velocity (CV) and serum phosphate levels. Findings revealed that composite z score of amplitude and CV were positively related to serum magnesium levels. Findings suggested an independent association of serum levels of phosphate and magnesium with the presence of DPN.
