Low incidence of SARS-CoV-2, risk factors of mortality and the course of illness in the French national cohort of dialysis patients

Cécile C, Florian B, Carole A, et al. - Researchers investigated the incidence of COVID-19 disease in the French national population of dialysis patients and their course of illness. In addition, they sought the risk factors associated with mortality. Using the French REIN Registry, they assessed a total of 1,621 infected patients reported from March 16, 2020 to May 4, 2020; 344 of these died. The regions differed in the prevalence of COVID-19 patients; the prevalence varied from less than 1% to 10%. They observed a higher probability of being a case in males, patients with diabetes, those in need of assistance for transfer or treated at a self-care unit. A higher risk of death was observed in statistically independent correlation with age, hypoalbuminemia and the presence of an ischemic heart disease. A lower risk was observed in correlation with being treated at a selfcare unit. Thus, this study indicated a comparatively low frequency of COVID-19 among dialysis cases contrary to what might have been assumed.
