Loss of appetite in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is associated with weight loss and decreased calorie consumption independent of dysphagia
Muscle & Nerve Nov 28, 2019
Mezoian T, Belt E, Garry J, et al. - Since up to half of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have been reported to suffer loss of appetite, which has been suggested to be related to weight loss, therefore, researchers investigated if there exists a correlation of loss of appetite with decreased dietary consumption independent of dysphagia. Among individuals who took part in the Electronic health Application To Measure Outcomes REmotely study, repeated measurements of appetite were obtained using the Council on Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire. Comparisons of dietary intake and weight with appetite, ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised total and bulbar scores (dysphagia) were performed. A link between loss of appetite and reduced calorie consumption and weight was supported in patients with ALS, which was independent of dysphagia.
