Longitudinal comparison of outcomes in patients with smoking-related asthma-COPD overlap and in non-smoking asthmatics with incomplete reversibility of airway obstruction
International Journal of COPD Mar 06, 2019
Boulet LP, et al. - Researchers analyzed 111 candidates to assess the consequences in subjects with smoking-related asthma-COPD overlap vs non-smoking asthmatics with incomplete reversibility of airway obstruction (IRAO) in this 12-month follow-up of a cross-sectional study. They divided the subjects into 2 groups: with tobacco exposure ≥20 pack-years and with asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) whereas the second with tobacco exposure history. They observed comparable exacerbations per case over the 12-month follow-up in both groups. They noted poorer asthma control scores in ACO cases over 1 year when compared to NS-IRAO.
