Long-term weight loss, metabolic outcomes, and quality of life at 10 years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass are independent of patients’ age at baseline

Mantziari S, Dayer A, Duvoisin C, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to provide long-term (> 10 years) effects on weight loss, metabolic outcomes, and quality of life in a large homogenous series of patients with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), based on age at baseline. All consecutive individuals who had primary RYGB between 1999 and 2007, and therefore eligible for 10-year follow-up, have been retrospectively analyzed. The series comprised of 820 individuals, with a 10-year follow-up of 80.6%. Likewise, glycemic control and lipid profile improved after 10 years, partial or complete diabetes remission and hypertension rates were similar, and quality of life showed a significant improvement for all patients with no inter-group disparity. The findings indicate similar short- and long-term outcomes for patients ≥ 55 years after RYGB compared with younger ones; the relative gain for older patients could be even higher due to their increased underlying comorbidity.
