Long-term risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (UKPDS 85)
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Jun 28, 2019
Maddaloni E, et al. - According to latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) status, researchers studied the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients enrolled in the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS). For this investigation, they measured diabetes autoantibodies (AAb) in 5,062 UKPDS participants. In total, 567 LADA patients were involved in this analysis. Patients with LADA were younger vs patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and had higher mean values of HbA1c and HDL-cholesterol, but lower body mass index, total cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure. The long-term risk of major adverse CV events in those with LADA was smaller in adults believed to have newly diagnosed T2D. However, there was no difference in risk after adjustment for traditional risk factors for CV, indicating that measurement of AAb with traditional risk factors for CV in those clinically diagnosed with T2D will not help in the stratification of CV risk.
