Long-term physical and psychological outcomes of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis
JAMA Dermatology May 11, 2021
Hoffman M, Chansky PB, Bashyam AR, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for exploring the chronic physical and psychological sequelae affecting patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN). A survey study carried out at 11 academic health centers in the US evaluated 121 individuals (73 women [60.3%]; mean [SD] age, 52.5 [17.1] years) diagnosed with SJS/TEN by inpatient consultive dermatologists between January 1, 2009, and September 30, 2019. Cutaneous problems, ocular problems, and oral mucosal problems were the most commonly reported long-term physical sequelae. According to this survey study, long-term physical sequelae, depression, and anxiety seem to be common in patients with SJS/TEN, with implications for health and well-being. Increased awareness of these complications may help health professionals provide medical care, counselling, and support to SJS/TEN patients.
