Long-term outcomes of urethral catheterization injuries: A prospective multi-institutional study
World Journal of Urology Apr 28, 2019
Davis NF, et al. - In this prospective study at 2 tertiary university hospitals, the long-term clinical outcomes, and complications of subjects with traumatic urethral catheterization (UC) injuries were studied. They recorded 37 iatrogenic urethral injuries whereas the incidence of traumatic UC was 13.4 per 1000 catheters inserted in males. Inflation of catheter anchoring balloon in the urethra or creating a false passage with the catheter tip was the cause of urethral injuries. About 78% of cases developed urethral stricture disease whereas 8 mortalities were also reported including one death due to serious urosepsis following catheter balloon inflation in the urethra.
