Long-term outcomes of upper eyelid loading with platinum segment chains for lagophthalmos: An adjustable approach
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 06, 2020
Ben Artsi E, et al. - In this consecutive case series, researchers reported the results of a 5-year series of individually sutured platinum segment chains for upper eyelid loading. In order to create the desired weight, platinum segments of 0.4 and 0.2 g were assembled and placed in a supratarsal location following levator aponeurosis recession. A total of 122 upper eyelids of 117 individuals received platinum segment chains for lagophthalmos during 2013-2018. There was no platinum allergy. Platinum segments are US Food and Drug Administration approved and give benefits of platinum chains with the additional advantages of allowing postoperative adjustability, decreased healthcare costs, and less possibility of inducing allergy than gold. Platinum segments are an ideal first-line lagophthalmos loading implant.
