Long-term outcomes of childhood sexual abuse: An umbrella review
The Lancet Psychiatry Sep 27, 2019
Hailes HP, et al. - Systematic review of existing meta-analyses on a wide range of long-term psychiatric, psychosocial, and physical health outcomes of childhood sexual abuse was performed. In addition, the quality of the literature was evaluated. Searching four databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Global Health), 19 meta-analyses were identified that included 559 primary studies, incorporating 28 outcomes in 4,089,547 participants. Findings indicated an association of childhood sexual abuse with a wide range of psychosocial and health outcomes, however, high quality was evident for systematic reviews on only two psychiatric disorders (posttraumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia) and one psychosocial outcome (substance misuse). Further review is recommended to investigate whether services should prioritise interventions that mitigate developing certain psychiatric disorders following childhood abuse requires.
