Long-term outcomes of Boston keratoprosthesis type I: The Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital experience
British Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 10, 2021
Wang LQ, Wu TY, Chen XN, et al. - In this retrospective case series, researchers reported the long-term outcomes of Boston keratoprosthesis type I (B-KPro type I) implantation in the management of severe ocular surface disorders. Between March 2011 and September 2019, patients who underwent B-KPro type I implantation at the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital were recruited. In total, 100 patients (103 eyes) who underwent B-KPro type I implantation were involved. The main indications were chemical burn, ocular trauma, herpetic keratitis and autoimmune diseases. In a Chinese patient group, B-KPro type I is a viable option for the treatment of severe ocular surface disorders in eyes where conventional keratoplasty has a poor prognosis, particularly in patients with chemical and thermal burns. In most cases, improved visual outcomes and a high retention rate can be achieved and maintained.
