Long-term outcomes in treated males with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa—A prospective, gender-matched study
International Journal of Eating Disorders Sep 01, 2019
Strobel C, et al. - Males vs females who were treated for anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) were examined for long-term outcomes in this prospective study. Researchers reassessed a total of 119 males with AN and 60 males with BN (5.8 ± 4.6 and 7.5 ± 5.9 years, respectively) following treatment, and compared them to matched female patients. As the literature on males with eating disorders is scarce, no conclusive results regarding longer term outcomes were evident. However, according to findings, males with AN relative to females showed slightly better outcomes. Moreover, males and females did not differ in BN outcomes. In all, the investigators suggested that males and females may benefit equally from existing treatment.
