Long term outcomes in fellow eyes comparing DSAEK and DMEK for treatment of Fuchs corneal dystrophy
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 23, 2021
Weisenthal RW, Yin HY, Jarstad AR, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing the long-term outcomes of Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in fellow eyes for the treatment of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FED). The sample consisted of 64 patients (128 eyes) with DSAEK followed by DMEK. DMEK and DSAEK had comparable levels of BSCVA and patient satisfaction in the fellow eye study with long-term follow-up. The DMEK eyes reached their BSCVA sooner, but the DSAEK eyes improved over a longer period of time. The DMEK group had more patients with 20/25 and 20/20 vision, but the difference was not statistically significant.
