Long-term oral budesonide treatment and risk of osteoporotic fractures in patients with microscopic colitis
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Feb 06, 2020
Reilev M, et al. - In patients with microscopic colitis (MC), researchers ascertained if use of oral budesonide was correlated with osteoporotic fractures (hip, wrist, and spinal fractures). They performed a case-control study nested within a cohort of patients with MC from 2004 to 2012 using data from the Danish nationwide health registries. Four hundred seventeen cases were identified with the first occurrence of an osteoporotic fracture. There was no overall link between the use of oral budesonide and osteoporotic fractures in MC-patients. There appeared to be an isolated adverse effect of budesonide on the risk of spinal fractures that appear to be associated with the dose.
