Long-term functional and oncologic outcomes of partial adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma
Urology Mar 05, 2020
Gomella PT, Sanford TH, Pinto PA, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective review from a prospectively managed database from 1995-2018 at the National Cancer Institute to assess the recurrence and functional results in a primarily hereditary cohort of individuals undergoing partial adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma. One hundred twenty-four partial adrenalectomies, removing 162 tumors, were performed in 107 patients. Partial adrenalectomy provides excellent oncological and functional benefits, saving most patients from steroid replacement therapy for a lifetime. Recurrences can be handled effectively by repeat surgery or active surveillance through functional work-up and imaging. Partial adrenalectomy remains the recommended treatment for patients predisposed to bilateral, multifocal and recurrent pheochromocytoma development.
