Long-term follow-up of intraocular pressure and pressure-lowering medication in patients after ab-interno trabeculectomy with the Trabectome

Avar M, et al. - In a retrospective monocentric study, researchers analyzed the long-term consequences of ab-interno trabeculectomy (AIT) in subjects with primary and secondary open-angle glaucoma. They estimated 81 eyes of 74 cases including 46 subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 28 candidates with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) were included. After a median follow-up period of 3.5 years, they recorded a significant reduction in the IOP (28% for POAG and 26% for PEXG) and a significant decrease of the number of IOP-lowering medication (32% for POAG and 29% for PEXG). They found ab-interno trabeculectomy an efficacious surgical method to significantly lower the intraocular pressure on a long-term basis in subjects with open-angle glaucoma, particularly pseudoexfoliative glaucoma.
