Long-term endothelial cell loss with the iris-claw intraocular phakic lenses (Artisan)
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Nov 08, 2019
Galvis V, Villamil JF, Acuña MF, et al. - Researchers analyzed 5 years of follow-up findings of patients who had undergone iris-claw phakic lens (Artisan) implantation, to assess the endothelial cell loss in these patients over a long-term follow-up. They analyzed 67 eyes with myopic errors and 10 eyes with mixed astigmatism or hyperopic errors, followed-up for 9.6 ± 3.0 years and for 8.8 ± 2.5 years, respectively. At the last follow-up visit, the mean total endothelial density loss was estimated to be 18.5% ± 17.0% and 10.5% ± 12.3%, respectively. Loss of more than 25% of the preoperative endothelial cell density was seen in 29.9% and 20% of the eyes in the myopic group and in the hyperopic group, respectively. Findings revealed that endothelial cell loss was significant in the long term in a low percentage of the eyes with Artisan lenses, and it could reduce to critical levels. These patients deserve periodic endothelial density assessments. The selection criteria of surgical candidates could be reexamined.
