Long-term effects of episiotomy on urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse: A systematic review
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics Dec 21, 2018
Frigerio M, et al. - Researchers examined the long-term effects of episiotomy on urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse via undertaking a systematic review including only studies with mean follow-up ≥ 5 years. They included 24 studies yielding the results indicating a possible detrimental effect of episiotomy with respect to urinary incontinence symptoms. They noted no clear relationship between episiotomy and anti-incontinence surgery. Episiotomy seems not influencing genital prolapse development negatively and it might even be protective with respect to prolapse severity and prevalence. Genital prolapse surgery rate is not influenced by episiotomy.
