Long‐term variability of blood pressure and incidence of heart failure among individuals with type 2 diabetes
ESC Heart Failure May 29, 2021
Kaze AD, Santhanam P, Erqou S, et al. - In this study, the relationship between long-term variability of blood pressure (BP) and incident heart failure (HF) in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Researchers recruited a sum of 4,200 participants with Type 2 diabetes who had available BP measurements at four visits (baseline and 12, 24, and 36 months) in the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) study. Using four metrics, variability of systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) across the four visits was measured. They used Cox regression to generate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for HF. The results revealed that in individuals with Type 2 diabetes, greater variability in SBP and DBP is independently correlated with a greater risk of incident HF.
