Loneliness and social isolation among older adults in a community exercise program: A qualitative study
Aging and Mental Health May 11, 2019
Hwang J, et al. - In this qualitative study, researchers conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews with 16 participants who completed Walk ‘n’ Talk for your Life (WTL), a community-based program of socialization, health education, falls prevention exercise and walking for community-dwelling older adults, in order to gain further insight into the experience these seniors. In addition, they examined how WTL influenced their loneliness and social isolation (L&SI). Participants felt the program motivated them to socialize and lowered their feelings of loneliness. The group exercise/walking part of the program seemed to create a sense of “belonging,” which helped with this.
