Lithium carbonate as add-on therapy to radioiodine in the treatment on hyperthyroidism: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Endocrine Disorders Apr 16, 2021
Abd-ElGawad M, Abdelmonem M, Ahmed AE, et al. - Researchers investigated the effect of LiCO3, as an add-on therapy with radioactive iodine, in enhancing the cure and lowering the T4 level vs radioactive iodine alone. The cure rate as defined by the number of hyperthyroid patients who became euthyroid or hypothyroid was assessed as the primary outcome. The T4 level was assessed as the secondary outcome. Researchers searched four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane central library) identifying nine eligible studies for inclusion, six randomized control trials and three non-randomized control trials. Findings revealed no significant differences in terms of cure rate or decreasing T4 level in correlation with LiCO3 adjunct to radioactive iodine vs radioactive iodine alone. However, the cure rate may increase with the dose of 5000 to 6000 mg of LiCO3.
